History of the 1993 Cadillac Allante

The 1993 Cadillac Allante was the last of the 1987 to 1993 two-seater luxury sports cars produced by General Motors. It was an improvement over previous Allante models with a larger engine to dampen criticism that it lacked power. It was the best seller of the series, yet GM could muster only 21,430 sales for the seven-year production run.

  1. Origins

    • A 1993 pink Cadillac Allante with the optional hardtop convertible.

Cadillac struggled in the 1970s and '80s to come up with an exciting and different model to boost sagging sales. It decided to compete against Mercedes-Benz and Jaguar in offering a personal luxury car.

    Two Assembly Plants

    • The Allante's body was desgined by exotic sports car stylist Pininfarina.

Famed Ferrari designer Pininfarina designed and built the Allante bodies in Italy and then shipped them to GM's Hamtramck, Michigan, plant for final assembly.

    Price Tag

    • An inside look at the 1993 model.

The price of the Allante rose steadily from the initial $54,700 in 1987 to $59,975 in 1993, making it the most expensive Cadillac ever produced.

    Final Changes

    • The front end of the 1993 model differs little from previous models.

Cadillac dropped the Allante's Recaro racing-style seats in 1993 for cheaper, dual-power seats and no longer offered the aluminum hardtop convertible as standard equipment.

    Under the Hood

    • Rear design of the Allante.

The best feature of the Allante's final year was the introduction of a 295-horsepower 4.6-liter V-8 engine, giving it a long-overdue power boost from the previous 4.5-liter version.

    Sales

    • The cockpit of the Allante is roomy despite its two-seater configuration.

Total production of the 1993 models was 4,670, nearly three times more than the 1992 Allante and far outdistancing all previous models.
