What Is Quilling Paper Made of?

Quilling is a craft that uses thinly cut pieces of paper to create three-dimensional designs. Artists make floral and other creations for decoration and jewelry. The craft is also known as paper rolling, filigree and paper scrolling.

Paper Types

Small strips of paper are used to make the designs. The average paper weight is that of copy paper, but specialty papers such as parchment may also be used.

Paper Size

The standard width of each strip is 1/8 inch, but this varies depending on the design desired. The strips are bunched together and sold in rolls in varying lengths with 22 to 24 inches being the most common.

Quilling Tools

Besides paper, quilling utilizes slotted tools or needles with a handle to roll the paper. Household items, such as toothpicks, can even be used.

Quilled Shapes

There are many shapes that can be created including teardrops, circles, hearts and squares. They are commonly placed in a floral motif and typically glued onto a paper surface.

Quilled Jewelry and Ornaments

The quilled shapes can also be glued together and made into earrings or freestanding ornaments for Christmas trees and other hanging decorations.
