What Kind of Knives Do You Use for Wood Carving?
The craft of wood carving has seen a resurgence in popularity in the last decade. With just one class of instruction, the beginner can get started at minimal expense. Even better, the craft is very portable. You can carry your wood and a carving knife or two with you and work on it whenever you have a few extra minutes. Carving knives are not actually all knives, therefore, they are better referred to as wood carving tools.

Carving Knife
-
A carving knife (or bench knife) is the first tool used when beginning a wood carving project. It's used for cutting indentations or creases in the wood or pairing it into the proper shape.
Chisel
-
This tool is used to make a chipping effect or to smooth out the carving wood. Chisels come in different width sizes for different jobs.
-
Gouge
-
A gouge is curved at the carving edge, used for gouging out hollow spaces into the wood. It comes in different widths and curving angles.
V-tool
-
The V-tool (or parting tool) is shaped just as it sounds, into a "v." It is used to make deep crevasses into the carving wood for decorating or to outline an area.
Sharpening
-
As with kitchen knives, a sharp carving knife (tool) is a safer one as you are less likely to add pressure to the tool, causing it to slip and cut your skin. Strops and sharpening stones are used to sharpen carving tools.
