Degrees Needed to Become a Vet Tech

Veterinary technicians are the nurses of the veterinary profession. Becoming a Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) requires a combination of classroom and clinical training. The American Veterinary Medical Association accredits veterinary technology education programs across the country. Most education requirements to become a veterinary technician can be completed in as little as two years.

Education

Most veterinary technician programs lead to an associate's degree, but a small number of programs lead to a bachelor's degree.

Benefits

An associate's degree is sufficient for most vet tech jobs, but vet techs with bachelor's degrees often earn higher salaries and have more responsibilities.

Types

According to the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), there are 154 accredited education programs for vet techs across the country. The majority of these lead to an associate's degree, while 18 lead to a bachelor's degree.

Features

Veterinary technology education programs include a period of clinical training that involves hands-on work with animals. Some vet tech programs have clinical facilities.

Distance Education

A small number of vet tech programs offer distance learning. Under this option, students fulfill the clinical part of their education through sponsorships by licensed veterinarians.
