Neti pots were first used as part of Ayurvedic medical tradition, which originated in India. Neti pots have been widely used as an alternative to over-the-counter medications.
Function

Neti pots work by helping to flush the toxins and mucus from the nasal passages, cleaning the nasal and sinus cavities.

Side Effects

Regular use of a Neti pot is considered generally safe. However, some users report mild irritation of the nasal passages or excessive dryness. Rarely, a minor nosebleed may occur.
Considerations

Neti pots can be used many times and therefore need to always be kept clean to help prevent any infections.
Warnings

Too much salt in the Neti pot solution may induce some side effects, such as stinging or redness. Adjusting the salt content may reduce those side effects.

When you use an irrigator pay close attention to contamination. In the July issue of the Journal of Rhinology they report a very high incidence of contamination in irrigators that have flowback where the nasal bacteria flow back into the irrigator. Even in patients who were on antibiotics, the devices showed contamination.
