What Is the Job of a Bank Teller?

The position of teller is an excellent entry level position into banking. Tellers learn a great deal about branch banking and have the opportunity to advance into other positions throughout banks.

  1. Customers

    • Tellers serve as the main regular contact to a bank's customers. They accept customer deposits, cash checks, process loan payments and answer questions.

    Cash

    • Tellers are responsible for balancing a cash drawer. They are accountable for ensuring that every transaction is completed accurately.

    Accounts

    • At some banks, tellers are responsible for opening and closing accounts. At others, they simply educate clients about products and services and refer them to an account officer.

    Monetary Instruments and Other Services

    • Tellers may be responsible for selling monetary instruments like cashiers or official checks, money orders and travelers checks. Some tellers also sell stamps or process utility bill payments.

    Operations

    • Tellers balance and service ATMs, utilize drive-thru teller stations, operate coin counters and assist with safety deposit boxes. They also may be responsible for encoding checks or ordering money for the branch.
