Symptoms of Dementia

Dementia has a number of causes including age, disease and injury, but depending on the cause, symptoms and degree of dementia can vary, occur suddenly or develop gradually over a number of years (see Resources).

    Memory

  1. Dementia-related memory problems are displayed as difficulty with short-term memories relating to recent occurrences, forgetting names, and misplacing things or leaving them in places where they would not normally be left.
  2. Language

  3. Dementia patients have difficulty remembering words or finding the correct words to express thoughts and ideas to others. Repeatedly saying the same thing is also a symptom of dementia according to Medicine Net.
  4. Performance

  5. People suffering from dementia will generally have difficulty performing routine tasks, involving sequential thinking, such as cooking, writing and checkbook balancing.
  6. Disorientation

  7. Persons with dementia exhibit symptoms of disorientation, forgetting where they are, how they got there, where they came from and how to get home.
  8. Personal Hygiene

  9. Problems with personal hygiene occur as a symptom of dementia causing patients to forget to bathe, brush their teeth and keep up with grooming.
