Cerebral Palsy in Babies
Cerebral palsy has no cure, yet there are many signs and symptoms that can help doctors and parents diagnose the problem in infants. Common symptoms are involuntary muscle control, premature birth, odd posture and difficulty feeding.
-
Lack of Muscle Control
-
A baby with cerebral palsy may have a difficult time controlling muscle movement. Uncontrollable shaking of the arms, legs and upper body is common.
Premature Birth
-
A baby born prematurely has an increased possibility of cerebral palsy. Low birth weight is associated with premature births, which is linked to the risk of cerebral palsy.
-
Congenital Malformation
-
Despite proper care, cerebral palsy can be caused before birth. There are several pre-birth factors, which include asphyxia, radiation and the prenatal death of a twin.
Posture
-
A baby with cerebral palsy tends to assume a posture that favors one side of his body.
Feeding Problems
-
A common symptom among babies with cerebral palsy is the limited ability to feed. Sucking and swallowing may be difficult. Such symptoms are usually involved with severe cerebral palsy.
Unusual Positions
-
Arching of the back and extending arms and legs are common in infants with cerebral palsy. The baby's body can either be extremely relaxed or overly stiff and rigid.
