Rules for Sending Packages to Soldiers in Iraq

Sending care packages to loved ones serving in Iraq helps families stay connected and boosts morale of troops overseas. Here are some of the military guidelines that need to be considered to ensure your package arrives safely.

  1. Addressing the Package

    • All packages must include the service member's full name. You can no longer send a package to "Any Service Member."

    Time Frame

    • Mail to Iraq can take up to three weeks to arrive. Time, combined with intense desert heat, should be considered when sending food items.

    Forbidden Items

    • Materials that are forbidden include alcohol, obscene or pornographic materials and food containing pork or pork byproducts.

    Packaging

    • Use a strong box, making sure the contents are well cushioned and that the seams of the box are sealed with USPS-approved tape. The box cannot be more than 130 inches in total length and width, and weigh no more than 70 pounds.

    Identification

    • Placing a card with the service member's name and a list of the package contents can help identify belongings if the box or label is damaged during shipping.

    Additional Guidelines

    • For a comprehensive list of military and postal guidelines regarding shipping to Iraq, please call the Military Postal Service at (800) 810-6098 or visit the USPS website (see Resources).
