Dry Cough Treatment for Children

While medication for dry cough is not approved for children under two, there are a variety of treatments available to help soothe throat irritation. Older children can take a cough suppressant to block the coughing reflex.

  1. Expert Insight

    • The FDA does not approve cough and cold medication for children under two because of the risk of accidental overdose. In addition, there's little research supporting the effectiveness of such medication. Talk to your doctor about alternatives for young children.

    Cough Suppressants

    • Older children can take a cough suppressant, which subdues the coughing reflex in the throat and lungs so mucus or irritation won't trigger coughing.

    Side Effects

    • Dizziness and drowsiness are common side effects of cough suppressants, so administer them before bedtime.

    Types

    • Robitussin Pediatric Cough Suppressant blocks the coughing reflex. Delsym is an extended-release suspension that lasts for 12 hours.

    Humidifier/Vaporizer

    • A cool-mist humidifier or vaporizer will help to open the passageways and ease throat irritation.

    Alternative Solutions

    • One homeopathic remedy that may be beneficial for dry cough is a spoonful of honey mixed with lemon. Liquids help flush out toxins, so try chicken soup, hot tea and gargling with warm salted water. Children older than four can suck on hard candy or cough drops.
