Treatments for Scalp Ringworm

There are a variety of treatments for the ringworm of the scalp (tinea capitis), in which fungus invades a person's scalp particularly affecting children. Treatment is intended to both improve the symptoms and to get rid of the fungus. Any of the approved methods must not be discontinued before the full course of treatment is completed.

  1. Types

    • Liquids such as Griseofulvin, granules such as Lamisil (which can be sprinkled onto foods), and medicated shampoos made with selenium sulfide are the most commonly prescribed treatments.

    Drawbacks

    • Treatment with shampoos may take longer to become effective as they are not as direct a method of delivery. Some side effects, such as digestive tract problems, have been reported by users of Lamisil.

    Misconceptions

    • It is often thought that the scalp must be shaved in order to treat ringworm, but this is not a necessary step.

    Effects

    • Ringworm of the scalp is completely curable; however, it is contagious, and children should be isolated during treatment.

    Timeframe

    • Treatments usually last as long as six weeks and should not be shortened without a doctor's approval.
