Several types flowers are associated with Hawaii, and innumerable flower species thrive in the tropical climate. Flowers are abundant in Hawaii and have cultural significance, such as the tradition of making flower leis. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Lei

    • Leis are symbolic of Hawaii. A lei is a garland worn around the neck and is often made of flowers.

    Plumeria

    • Plumeria is the most common flower used for leis, and grows abundantly on the islands. Despite its association with Hawaii, plumeria is not native to the South Pacific region.

    Pikake

    • Pikake is a species of jasmine prized for its strong scent and ornamental value. Its smell is evocative of the Hawaiian islands.

    Hibiscus

    • Although there are 200 species of hibiscus, only seven of them are native to the Hawaiian islands. Several species of Hawaiian hibiscus are listed as endangered by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

      The hibiscus brackenridgei, which has bright yellow flowers, is the official state flower of Hawaii. It is named ma'o hau hele in Hawaiian.
