Health Dangers of Molds and Mildew
All molds have the potential to cause health problems. Molds require moisture to form and thrive. Mildew is a mold fungi that also grows under high humidity and moist areas---attics, basements, windows, electrical outlets or anywhere that moisture can be found. Some health problems caused by mold could be temporary, while others may be long term or even permanent.

Allergic Reactions
-
Respiratory problems, hay fever symptoms, nose and throat irritation, nasal congestion, sensitivity to light, runny nose, fatigue and headaches are all allergic reactions to molds and mildew.
Nervous System Effects
-
Molds and mildews cause central nervous system problems, such as mood changes, headaches or memory loss.
-
Infections
-
Molds can invade the tissues of the lungs or respiratory tract, which can be dangerous for anyone with a weakened immune system, causing infection and other complications.
Toxic Effects
-
Toxic molds are aspergillus, cladosporium, penicillium, stachybotrys and trichaderma. These molds can cause cell disruption and serious health problems for the nervous system, liver, kidney and lungs.
Treatment
-
Molds and mildew should be cleaned up with a solution of 1 1/2 cups bleach to a gallon of water. Let the solution set on the contaminated surface for 10 minutes, then wipe clean and dry well. A fan helps with the drying process. Use a pair of rubber gloves and a hepa filter respirator while you clean to protect you from coming into contact with mold spores. Or hire a company to clean the area professionally.
