Spa Chemicals Side Effects

Spas are wonderful for relaxing the mind and easing body aches. They are also wonderful breeding grounds for microorganisms. That's why spa owners use some rather nasty chemicals to keep their watery oasis clean. However, these substances aren't so healthy for the humans who dip into those treated waters.

Significance

Chemicals used to keep spas in a sanitary state are often toxic to people as well as harmful organisms. Many of these chemicals can irritate mucous tissue such as the eyes, nose and throat, or can cause redness, itching and scaling of the skin.

Types

Eye and upper-respiratory symptoms are the most common side effects from chlorine, a common anti-bacterial agent. Overchlorination and the use of certain chemicals like sodium persulfate can also dry and irritate the skin.

Function

Spa chemicals typically cause an oxidative reaction that disrupts the cell walls of algae, bacteria, molds, yeasts and other microorganisms. They do the same thing to human mucosal and skin tissues.

Features

Eye and respiratory side effects present themselves in the form of redness, itchiness, a burning sensation or a dry cough. More serious effects can include asthma attacks or bronchitis (with prolonged exposure in most cases).

Considerations

Only treat the water in a spa when there is no one using it. Ensure adequate ventilation when using these chemicals and when the spa is in use. Do not use metal implements for measuring or stirring the chemicals into the water; this could cause a reaction resulting in the release of harmful metallic compounds into the water.
