What Is a CPU Fan?

A CPU fan is a large fan that is attached to a computer's central processing unit (CPU) to help keep the processor from overheating. CPU fans are usually installed on top of a heat sink that conducts heat away from the CPU.

  1. Function

    • CPU fans are an important part of most desktop computer's operation; by creating airflow within the case, a CPU fan reduces the operating temperature of the processor, which helps the computer run faster.

    Overheating

    • If a CPU fan is not working properly, the CPU may overheat. Overheating causes computers to run slower and may produce crashes or permanent damage to the CPU.

    Power

    • CPU fans are powered by a special four pin plug on the motherboard rather than drawing power directly from the power supply.

    Temperature

    • The operating temperature of the CPU can be found by entering the BIOS setup utility during start up or using a temperature monitoring program. The temperature can indicate whether the fan is doing its job well.

    Replacement

    • Some CPU fans can be replaced independently of the heat sink, but many cooling systems come as a heat sink and fan unit, and the fan is not easily detachable from the heat sink.
