Symptoms of Arterial Blockage

An arterial blockage is ultimately the build up of plaque within the artery. This build up inevitably affects the blood flow, bringing with it a number of symptoms that can vary, depending on the area in which the blockage has formed.

Chest Pain

One of the most common symptoms of arterial blockage, especially in cases of coronary artery disease, is some level of pain within the chest.

Heart Problems

Symptoms of an arterial blockage may manifest as heart palpitations, an irregular heartbeat or rapid heart rate.

Nausea

Some people dealing with an arterial blockage may experience nausea or a feeling of indigestion. This is due to the effect the arterial blockage is having on the heart.

Dizziness or Lightheadedness

On occasion, an arterial blockage may cause episodes of dizziness or lightheadedness. This would again be due to the effect the blockage has on the heart, reducing the oxygen levels within the body.

Slurring

If an arterial blockage has caused carotid artery disease, slurred speech may develop.

Mobility Problems

If the arterial blockage begins to affect the brain, as would be seen in carotid artery disease, patients may experience trouble their arms and legs. Yet, in the case of peripheral artery disease, it may also manifest as leg pain. In coronary artery disease, it may simply come on as an unexpected weakness, which would inevitably affect mobility.
