Fencing Rules & Regulations
There are three different weapons used in fencing (epee, sabre and foil), and each has a specific set of rules & regulations. However, there are some rules & regulations that all three have in common.

Clothing and Gear

All fencers must wear a mask, a glove and a jacket. All clothing and gear should fit properly to avoid snagging, getting in the way or having to be frequently adjusted.
Weapons

In a tournament, all weapons will be checked repeatedly to make sure they have not been tampered with and are in proper working order. In any situation, weapons need to be in good repair in order to ensure safety and fairness.

Technique

While not actually in motion, fencers should be in the en garde position. Fencers are also expected to use proper footwork and weapon-handling techniques.
Violence

While fencing requires a certain amount of aggression, violence is actually prohibited. Hitting an opponent unnecessarily hard, running down the strip or otherwise using excessive force, is frowned upon at all times, and will be penalized in a tournament. Body contact is also prohibited.
The Strip

Fencers fence on a strip or piste. They must stay within the boundaries of the strip at all times during a bout.
Salute and Shake Hands

Fencing etiquette has roots in the code of chivalry, and fencers are expected to show respect for each other. Each bout begins with both fencers formally saluting each other with their weapons. At the end of each bout, the fencers should shake hands using their non-weapon hands.
