What is Trojan Horse Downloader?

A Trojan Horse, or Trojan, is a common form of malware that may infect computers connected to the Internet. Like its namesake, a Trojan enters a computer by appearing helpful but performs malicious actions once it has infected the computer.

Features

Trojans may use pop-up windows to prompt users to download fake computer protection programs or may be attached to other files or games downloaded from the Internet.

Types

Some Trojans are harmless but annoying, and others allow the host remote access to the infected computer and its files. Some destroy the infected computer's files or download other malicious programs.

Identification

The presence of a Trojan may affect your computer's performance, making it slow or producing error messages. Regular use of updated and reputable anti-virus software should detect any Trojans on your computer.

Prevention/Solution

Using a script blocker while browsing the Internet prevents unwanted scripts, such as pop-ups encouraging you to download malware, from running. Visiting trusted websites also reduces the risk of accidentally downloading a Trojan.

Resolution

Anti-virus and anti-spyware software will detect and remove and/or quarantine Trojans on your computer. Some Trojans must be deleted manually, and the temporary Internet files cleared.
