The pottery wheel is a machine used to shape clay into rounded forms. It is also used to shave excess clay from dried clay forms. The pottery wheel has been around since prehistoric times and is still in use today. The pottery wheel is also known as the potter's lathe or the potter's wheel.

    Early History

  1. The earliest dates for the concept of the potter's wheel are thought to be from 14,000 to 8,000 BC.
  2. Inventions

  3. Around 3,000 BC a slow turning wheel was invented. Around 600 BC a fast turning wheel was invented.
  4. Iron Age Pottery Wheels

  5. In the Iron Age, the potter's wheel had a flywheel connected to an axle. The axle was connected to a turning platform.
  6. The New World

  7. It wasn't until the arrival of Columbus that the concept of the pottery wheel was introduced to the New World.
  8. Modern Pottery Wheels

  9. Modern pottery wheels are motorized, but manual pottery wheels are still used.
