Is Back Pain a Symptom of Hepatitis C?

Hepatitis C is a viral infection of the liver that comes in two forms. There is acute hepatitis C, which only means that you have just been infected. Chronic hepatitis C is where you have been infected for more than six months. There are many symptoms associated with hepatitis C, but back pain is usually not a symptom.

  1. Infection

    • Many individuals who have hepatitis C may not develop signs for up to 30 years. Some people may never know they carry the disease because they may never develop symptoms.

    Common Symptoms

    • Symptoms associated with hepatitis C are fatigue, joint pain of the arms and legs, jaundice, nausea, abdominal pain and loss of appetite.

    Cirrhosis

    • Once a person has lived with the disease for many years, they may find out they have it when they develop cirrhosis of the liver. Because of the disease, many people will develop a need for a transplant and could possibly die without one.

    Cirrhosis Symptoms

    • You may have redness of the hands, spider veins, swelling, muscle shrinkage, variceal bleeding (bleeding within the digestive tract) and encephalopathy (damage to your brain and nervous system).

    Back Pain

    • There are many causes for back pain, but it is widely believed that hepatitis C is not a common factor. You are more likely to have back pain due to degenerative diseases or an injury than hepatitis C.

    Duration

    • Hepatitis C is a disease that can last a lifetime. If diagnosed, one should develop a health plan with a physician to understand your condition and whether treatment is necessary.
