Pears Soap History

Pears Soap is unique in many ways. It was not only the first transparent soap manufactured, but the first soap to use glycerin as an ingredient. Pears is also the world's first registered brand. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Andrew Pears

    • Andrew Pears, who created the soap in 1780, was a practicing barber in London. Noting the sun damage caused to the skin of those who worked outdoors, he devised a plan to create a gentle, purifying cosmetic product. The result was Pears Translucent Soap.

    Ingredients and Other Properties

    • The ingredients in Pears Soap are glycerine, natural oils, thyme, cedar and rosemary. Pears Soap contains no animal fats. The soap is aged for three months to achieve its clear amber color.

    Marketing Campaign

    • For more than 100 years, Pears used Sir John Everett Millais' painting, "Bubbles," as part of its print advertising campaign. From 1891 to 1925, Pears also conducted "Miss Pears" competitions. Many young girls who won the competition made a successful foray into acting and modeling.

    A. & F. Pears

    • In 1835, Andrew Pears was joined by his grandson, Francis Pears, to continue his business. The junior Pears created the company A. & F. Pears.

    Pears International, Inc.

    • A. & F. Pears was bought by Lever Brothers in the mid-1910s and became known as Pears International, Inc. Currently, there is only one production plant, located in India, that manufactures Pears Soap.

    Pears Products

    • Products that can be purchased in the United States include Pears Translucent Soap, Pears Body Wash, Pears Facial Cleanser, Pears Oil Control Soap, Pears Oil-Free Facial Cleanser and Pears Original Hand Wash.
