A coffee filter is an essential part of brewing coffee that keeps the grounds from being brewed into the coffee. Many different types of coffee filters have been used throughout the years to filter out coffee grounds from coffee.

  1. Paper coffee filters are made from crepe paper. Paper filters come several different sizes and can be bleached or unbleached.

  3. South Indian coffee is brewed with a stainless steel coffee filter. The filter sits on top of the basin reserved for the coffee.

  5. Some coffee filters are made of plastic. The plastic is shaped like a small basket that can hold coffee grounds and be re-used.

  7. The paper filter that is commonly used today was invented in 1908 by a German housewife named Melitta Bentz.
  8. Size

  9. Common sizes and shapes for coffee filters are cone shaped in the sizes of 2, 4, and 6; and basket shapes for 8 to 12 cup size.
