What Fungus Causes Itchy Red Skin?

Skin fungus infections can sometimes be hard to diagnose. Sometimes fungus infections resemble dermatitis or other skin conditions. However, there are a wide variety of fungus that causes itchy, red skin on the body.

  1. Tinea Pedis

    • Tinea pedis, athlete's foot, is a common fungus found on the feet and is caused by damp feet or consistently wearing shoes. Symptoms of athlete's foot include burning and itching, and dry, red patches found between the toes.

    Tinea Cruris

    • Tinea cruris is a fungus that grows around the groin area. Because of heat and moisture and poor circulation, tinea cruris causes redness and flaking and peeling occurs around the inner thighs and groin area.

    Tinea Corpora

    • Ringworm, also known as tinea corpora, isn't a parasitic worm but a skin fungus. The fungus causes a raised, red circular pattern surrounded by a itching, flaky ring and as the fungus grows, the ring gets larger.

    Candidiasis

    • Candidiasis causes brownish-red, flaky patches that occur under the breasts, around the mouth, underarms, and rectum. Candidiasis is also the same kind of fungus that causes vaginal yeast infections in women.

    Warning

    • If patients experience the following symptoms, they should immediately consult a medical doctor. Some over the counter medication can help alleviate symptoms but most skin fungus infections need to be treated with prescription medication.
