What Are the Dimensions of an Ice Hockey Net?

The NHL Rulebook defines the dimensions of an ice hockey net.

  1. Goal Post and Cross Bar Color

    • The color of the goal post and the cross bar is red.

    Goal Posts

    • The two flexible detachable goal posts are attached to the ice by 10-inch-long studs that are placed in the ice surface. The two goal posts are exactly 6 feet apart. The studs that hold the goal posts in place are light green in color.

    Net Dimensions

    • The size of the hockey net is exactly 4 feet high and 6 feet wide. The mess of the hockey net must have one-half-inch openings. This means the holes in the net.

    Cross Bar

    • The cross bar is attached to the top of the two goal posts. It is exactly 6 feet in length.

    Net Color

    • The hockey net must be made of white nylon cord.

    Net Attachment

    • The net is draped over the back of the two goal posts and cross bar. The net is attached in such a manner to be loose enough to keep the puck inside the net yet strong enough to prevent the puck from leaving the net.
