Facial Herpes Symptoms

Facial herpes, also referred to as oral herpes or even cold sores, are generally a result of an infection of the herpes simplex virus type 1, according to the Mayo Clinic. Yet, some people will also suffer from facial herpes due to contact with herpes simplex virus type 2, though this is usually the cause of genital herpes. When an individual is suffering from facial herpes, there are a few telltale signs that indicate he has contracted the virus, no matter which "type" it is.

  1. Fever

    • Most people who have contracted facial herpes will suffer from a fever prior to any other symptom. This may be a mild to moderate fever of between 100 and 102 degrees F.

    Aches

    • Many times, fever will be accompanied by aches and discomfort within the muscles.

    Fatigue

    • As the herpes virus invades the system, the individual may also begin to experience some level of fatigue or exhaustion.

    Pain

    • Another rather common symptom of facial herpes will involve pain or a burning sensation in the area of the infection on the skin prior to an actual outbreak.

    Sores

    • After the pain or burning has set in, a person suffering from facial herpes will typically experience an outbreak of sores on or around the mouth and sometimes down the chin, cropping up in clusters. They will appear grayish in color and will often scab over quickly.
