Eye Migraine Symptoms

Eye migraines are usually called ocular migraines. Whether they really differ from classic migraines is a point of contention among many doctors and neurologists. However, according to the Mayo Clinic, the symptoms of classic migraines with aura and ocular migraines are nearly identical. The only difference is that the bulk of the pain will be in one eye.

  1. First Symptoms

    • Many people with ocular migraines experience an aura about 15 minutes before the pain begins. Auras can be visual hallucinations, such as flashes, zigzags or spots, but they can also be audible hallucinations, such as ringing or buzzing.

    Next Symptoms

    • The pain begins in the eye and spreads out over one side of the head. This pain can be throbbing or steady, or it can feel like a tremendous pressure inside the eye.

    Other Symptoms

    • Many people with ocular migraines also get dizziness, extreme sensitivity to light and sound, nausea and vomiting.

    Time Frame

    • Ocular migraines can last as long as a couple of hours or can last several days. It's different not only for each person, but also different for each migraine attack.

    Warning

    • If you have never had an ocular migraine before and suddenly get all of these symptoms, your doctor may advise you to go to the hospital immediately, because the symptoms are similar to a stroke.
