Dextromethorphan HBR (HBR = hydrobromide) is an over-the-counter cough suppressant. It is also used by some as a recreational drug for its euphoric and hallucinogenic properties at high doses.

    Function

  1. Dextromethorphan HBR is used to treat a dry (nonproductive) cough caused by colds, flu or inhaled irritants. It can be used alone or in combination with other cold and flu medicines.
  2. Effect

  3. Dextromethorphan HBR acts in the medulla of the brain to suppress the cough reflex.
  4. Types

  5. Dextromethorphan HBR is commonly found in cough syrups and combination cold and flu remedies often designated by DM on the packaging.
  6. Considerations

  7. As a result of its abuse potential, many pharmacies now carry all dextromethorphan products behind the counter and require an ID for purchase. There may also be a limit on how many units are sold to a single individual.
  8. Warnings

  9. Using dextromethorphan HBR frequently and at high doses may produce a condition called toxic psychosis in which symptoms manifest as incoherent speech, agitated behavior or illusions. Dextromethorphan HBR should not be taken with medications classified as SSRIs or MAOIs.
