- Dextromethorphan HBR is used to treat a dry (nonproductive) cough caused by colds, flu or inhaled irritants. It can be used alone or in combination with other cold and flu medicines.
- Dextromethorphan HBR acts in the medulla of the brain to suppress the cough reflex.
- Dextromethorphan HBR is commonly found in cough syrups and combination cold and flu remedies often designated by DM on the packaging.
- As a result of its abuse potential, many pharmacies now carry all dextromethorphan products behind the counter and require an ID for purchase. There may also be a limit on how many units are sold to a single individual.
- Using dextromethorphan HBR frequently and at high doses may produce a condition called toxic psychosis in which symptoms manifest as incoherent speech, agitated behavior or illusions. Dextromethorphan HBR should not be taken with medications classified as SSRIs or MAOIs.
