The Signs & Symptoms of a Wine Allergy

A glass of red wine with a meal or after work is a popular way for adults to relax. It can be alarming when that wine ends up causing a physical reaction that may indicate an allergy to wine.

  1. Headache

    • Some people suffer from headaches and migraines after having just one glass of wine. According to several studies, including one published in the March 1988 medical journal, Lancet, the exact cause of this reaction remains unknown.

    Cold-Like Symptoms

    • Some people experience a runny or stuffy nose and itchy, watery eyes when they drink wine. This is likely caused by naturally occurring histamines in wine.

    Redness

    • A red nose or flushed skin anywhere on the body can also occur in people who are allergic to wine.

    Difficulty Breathing or Swallowing

    • Anaphylaxis, which is a severe allergic reaction, can cause the throat to swell and close up, making breathing or swallowing difficult.

    Hives

    • Another reaction to the histamines in wine is the formation of hives, red bumps or welts that can appear all over the body.
