Treatment for Pancreas Pain

The pancreas is a small organ, yet it plays a major role in our bodies. The pancreas aids in digestion and is also the "control center" for our glucose levels, as the pancreas produces insulin. The most common reasons for experiencing pain in the pancreas are inflammation (called pancreatitis) or growths (tumors) that develop on the organ itself. The treatment that your doctor chooses to reduce your pancreas pain will depend on the underlying cause of the inflammation (see Resources).

  1. Fasting

    • Allowing your pancreas to rest via fasting is a treatment method you may be required to undergo under the supervision of your doctor. You may be allowed clear liquids after a few days. If you have become dehydrated due to your pancreatitis, you may receive IV fluids in a hospital setting.

    Medication

    • An important part of treating pancreatic pain is to manage the pain via the use of medications. Your doctor will prescribe medications that are appropriate to your pain level.

    Healthy Diet

    • Eating a healthy diet that is low in fats may help reduce your discomfort. If you are deficient in the pancreatic enzymes that play a role in digestion, you may be prescribed supplements to take with your meals.

    Surgery

    • Surgery is used as a treatment for pancreas pain in the cases of pancreatic tumors and gallstones. Gallstones can cause pancreatitis, in which case the gallbladder is surgically removed. Both benign and cancerous tumors can be removed from the pancreas to reduce your level of pain.

    Rehabilitation

    • One of the causes of chronic pancreas pain in some people is heavy alcohol use. If you experience frequent bouts of pancreatitis and have a problem with alcohol, your doctor may encourage you to get help through a rehab program.
