  1. History

    • German candy maker Hans Riegal is credited with creating the first gummy bears. He invented the first gummy bears in 1922 and produced the candy treats under the company name Haribo, an acronym for his full name Hans Riegal Bonn.

    Time Frame

    • Gummy bears were imported from Germany until 1981 when the Herman Goelitz Company (now known as the Jelly Belly Candy Company) began recreating the German candy. The German candy company Haribo created an American-based company and began distributing the gummy bear candy in 1982.

    Identification

    • Gummy bears are usually an average of 1/2 inch in length and come in an assortment of colors that include red, orange, green, yellow and translucent. Traditional flavors include raspberry, orange, strawberry, pineapple and lemon.

    Nutrition

    • Regular gummy bear candy contains empty sugar calories, but manufacturers are now creating gummy bears that contain vitamin C and multivitamins. Manufacturers are also creating gummy bears that promote beauty needs, such as healthy skin.
