Symptoms of a Staph Skin Infection

A staph skin infection is caused by the bacteria staphylococcus. Staph is often present on a person's body without causing any problems. However, when it enters the skin through an opening, it can cause an infection and other various symptoms.

  1. Types

    • A staph skin infection may cause cellulites, and symptoms may include red skin that is painful and swollen. Impetigo is also caused by a staph skin infection, and symptoms may include a small blister, which becomes itchy and develops a crust.

    Features

    • Some staph skin infection symptoms include a boil, which may continue to grow as it fills with pus. The areas may become red, painful and eventually the pus may ooze out.

    Warning

    • Serious staph skin infections may cause additional symptoms. If the infection has spread into the bloodstream, fatigue, fever and nausea may occur and require medical treatment.

    Prevention

    • Developing good hygiene practices, including frequent hand washing, can prevent staph skin infection symptoms. Other preventive measures include keeping cuts covered and clean.

    Treatment

    • To ease symptoms from a staph skin infection, apply a warm compress on the wound for 15 minutes four times a day. This may help relieve pain and promote pus drainage from the infection.
