Foods That May Cause a Gallbladder Attack

Gallbladder attacks are usually triggered by foods that are rich in fat, such as dairy products, nuts, margarine and red meats. Other foods to avoid while experiencing gallbladder flareups are coffee, alcohol, chocolate, cabbage, fruit juices, onions, oranges, corn and eggs.

  1. Identification

    • Pain in the upper area of the abdomen on the right side after consuming a meal which can spread to the right shoulder or back area.

    Diagnosis

    • Your physician will need to order an ultrasound or CT scan to diagnose and evaluate for gallstones or gallbladder disease.

    Treatment

    • A low-fat diet without spicy foods can usually calm gallbladder attacks. A liver/gallbladder flush can also be helpful to remove lodged waste that the liver and gallbladder are harboring. Gallbladder surgery, which is the most common of major surgeries, might be needed. Your physician can help you decide on the proper treatment.

    Prevention/Solution

    • Monitor your consumption of fatty foods. Helpful foods to calm the attack and relief pain are sweet potatoes, vinegars, tomatoes, fish, lemons, apples, pears, green beans and cucumbers.

    Misconceptions

    • Acid reflux can also cause the same symptoms as a gallbladder attack. However, acid reflux never lasts as long as a gallbladder attack
