What is Singulair Used for?
Singulair is a brand name for the drug montelukast, and is usually administered orally. It is typically prescribed to treat the symptoms of allergies or asthma. Singulair is manufactured by Merck & Co.
-
How it Works
-
Singulair works by blocking certain substances, called leukotrienes, in the body, decreasing symptoms such as breathing problems, sneezing, stuffy, runny and itchy nose.
Dosage
-
Singulair is taken once each day, whether or not symptoms are present. When treating asthma, Singulair should be taken in the evening. When treating allergies, Singulair can be taken at any time of the day.
-
Exercise-Induced Asthma
-
Singulair can also treat symptoms of exercise-induced asthma if taken two hours before exercising.
Side Effects
-
Side effects of Singulair include headaches, the flu, or abdominal pain. Most people do not experience side effects from Singulair.
Asthma Attacks
-
Singulair should not be used to treat asthma attacks. If you have asthma, your health care professional will prescribe an inhaler for you as well.
