What is the Job of a Sonogram Technician?

Sonogram technicians use ultrasound equipment to view the internal workings of a patient. The images produced can show blood composition, organs, fluids and internal masses. Sonogram technicians necessarily work directly with patients.

    • A sonogram technician is responsible for insuring the safety of his patient and properly using the equipment. They are also required to prepare and keep records of all the data collected.

    Requirements

    • A sonogram technician must have a background in medicine. He will also need extensive knowledge of anatomy and biology. Two-year and four-year degrees are available.

    Credentials

    • Although it is not required, a sonogram technician should get registered. Employers prefer to hire registered technicians with the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS).

    Career Advancement

    • Sonographers who are already specialized may often specialize in another field of sonography. Sonographers can also find advancement opportunities in education, research and administration.

    ARDMS

    • The American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography is responsible for examining and administering tests for those who want to get registered. There are four certifications and 13 examinations.
