Job Description for a Church Hospitality Usher

A church hospitality usher plays a large roll in creating an atmosphere of welcoming and acceptance at a church. He is often the first person that people meet as they walk through the front doors, and it is his job to make them feel welcome and comfortable on a number of levels.

  1. Greeting

    • An usher stands by the front door and greets people as they enter the church during a regular service or special event. He may shake hands, give a kiss on the cheek or simply enjoy a pleasant chat with people as they arrive.

    Meeting

    • A hospitality usher makes a special effort to meet and talk to newcomers, asking them about themselves and welcoming them to the church.

    Seating

    • An usher is responsible for finding seats for the people who enter the church and "ushering" the people to them. This becomes more challenging as the service progresses and the sanctuary fills.

    Connecting

    • A church hospitality usher tries to connect new people to church members by making introductions and encouraging discussion. His goal is to make sure the people he has greeted have the opportunity to build relationships with other people in the church.

    Giving

    • An usher may be in charge of handing out gifts to newcomers before they leave. These gifts may include a book and information about the church's schedule and ministries.
