What Is an iPod Nano Dock Adapter?

iPods have a number of different accessories with a variety of functions. For a first time iPod owner, what's available to go with an iPod can be overwhelming. One of the more curious peripherals is the iPod Nano Dock Adapter.

  1. General Information

    • The iPod Nano Dock Adapter comes with all iPod Nanos, and according to Apple.com allows the iPod Nano to fit a variety of licensed 3rd-party accessories.

    Purpose

    • All iPod accessories are designed with the standard iPod dimensions in mind. Since the iPod Nano is much smaller than the standard model, the dock adapter makes it so it will fit in accessories which would otherwise be too big for it.

    Limitations

    • The iPod Nano Dock Adapter will only work with second-generation iPod Nanos and not earlier versions. Older iPod models, such as the iPod mini, are also not supported.

How to Tell if Your Dock Adapter is an iPod Nano Dock Adapter

    • Dock adapters ship with almost every kind of iPod. With this in mind, Apple made sure to number the iPod Adapters to avoid confusion. iPod Nano Dock Adapters each have a different number, depending on the generation: 1 GB, 2GB and 4GB iPod Nanos are numbered 8; the second generation iPod Nano 2 GB, 4 GB and 8 GB models are numbered 11; the third generation 4 GB and 8 GB models are number 13; and fourth generation iPod Nanos are numbered 16.

    Other iPod models

    • While most other iPod models have their own version of a dock adapter allowing them to work with various iPod accessories, some like the iPod shuffle lack a dock connector at all, which in essence means they have no way to connect to accessories.
