History of Graduation Tassels
Throughout history tassels have been used on many things. They have been attached to keys, used as decoration on furniture and drapes, and attached to uniforms. Tassels used for graduation are attached by a loop to the top of a mortarboard or tam, or attached to the end of an honor cord.

The Beginning

Graduation tassels have been used in the United States since the late 19th century. Like cords, which have been used since the 14th century, the tassels reflect the level of learning. Tassels on the ends of honor cords indicate the honor that you have earned.
Colors

The color of the tassel on your cap may be the color or colors of your educational institution. They may also signify your area of study.

How Tassels Are Worn

The tassels on your cap should hang from your right, and after receiving the degree, you flip the tassel to the left. In some cases it is flipped before you leave the stage. In other cases, your entire class is directed to turn them at the same time at some point during the ceremony.
Exception

There is one exception about wearing the tassel. When you receive a Master's degree, you begin with the tassel hanging from the left and it is then turned to the right side after receive your degree.
Another Tradition

A modern tradition with tassels is the idea of hanging your tassel from your rear view mirror after graduation. This is common among American high school graduates to signify their accomplishment.
