Fashion merchandisers are responsible for selecting and buying clothing to be sold in stores. They forecast trends in order to decide what to stock in stores and how to most effectively display and market them to consumers.

    Education

  1. Fashion merchandising requires at least a two-year degree in fashion merchandising, which includes courses in fashion promotion, consumer reporting and marketing.
  2. Retail Experience

  3. Fashion merchandisers must have a background in fashion retail, usually starting in sales or as a fashion buyer.
  4. Prediction

  5. Researching current fashion trends and industry reports and having the ability to analytically predict what upcoming fashions to purchase is a major requirement of fashion merchandisers.
  6. Critical Thinking

  7. Fashion merchandisers must be able to make educated decisions about how to manage a budget and purchase the right balance of functional and trendy clothing for a store's specific clientele.
  8. Marketing

  9. Marketing plays a major role in fashion merchandising, so merchandisers must be able to know the best way to promote merchandise, such as through advertising and in-store clothing displays.
