Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder is a common disorder in children that causes them to have trouble focusing, to be easily distracted, and to behave in a hyperactive manner. The most common treatment for ADHD is stimulant medication.

  1. Stimulant treatment for ADHD comes in two varieties: Ritalin-based and Adderall-based. Ritalin and Adderall are stimulant medications that work effectively to treat ADHD.

  3. Stimulant treatment enables a child with ADHD to stay focused and exercise body control. Even very hyperactive children can remain focused and still while taking stimulant medication.

  5. Stimulant treatments frequently cause lack of appetite and insomnia, resulting in weight loss and irritability, respectively. Long-term use can affect a child's growth.
  6. Types

  7. Most stimulant treatment is administered in pill form. While most must be swallowed whole, some can be crushed and served in applesauce. Stimulant treatment is also available in patch form.
  8. Warning

  9. Children with a history of heart disease or tics should not use a stimulant treatment for ADHD. Stimulant medication is potentially fatal for people with heart disease.
