Causes of Itchy Skin During Pregnancy

Pregnancy is a time of joy and excitement, but it can also be a time of physical discomfort. Itchy skin is a common pregnancy complaint and there are many different causes of pregnancy-related itchiness.

  1. Hormonal Fluctuations

    • It's no secret that hormones are in flux during pregnancy. The same hormones that are responsible for mood swings and cravings are also responsible for skin dryness that can lead to itching.

    Skin Stretching

    • Skin is remarkably flexible, but it does have its limits. During pregnancy, the excessive stretching as the abdomen swells can cause uncomfortable itching.

Pruritic Urticarial Papules and Plaques of Pregnancy

    • In the third trimester, some women develop itchy red bumps and pustules on their abdomen. This is called pruritic urticarial papules and plaques of pregnancy, or PUPPP. It is not dangerous and disappears shortly after childbirth.

    Intrahepatic Cholestasis of Pregnancy

    • Intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy interferes with the transfer of bile to the liver, resulting in the build-up of bile salts. This can cause intense and painful itching that isn't accompanied by a rash. This condition can be serious if left untreated.

    Pre-existing Skin Conditions

    • Pre-existing skin conditions such as psoriasis, eczema and allergies can be exacerbated by pregnancy. Check with your doctor before continuing any previously prescribed medication to make sure it won't be harmful to your baby.
