Incontinence is a condition where the bladder cannot hold urine in properly and leakage can develop. This is usually due to pelvic floor muscles that do not contract and release properly. A number of things can cause this to happen.

  1. Infection

    • Urinary tract infections are caused from bacteria that gets inside the urethra and bladder. This can lead to incontinence.

    Pregnancy

    • The pelvic floor muscles can end up becoming weak when a woman is pregnant, which can cause the bladder to not function properly.

    Inflammation

    • A condition called interstitial cystitis, which is characterized by the walls of the bladder becoming inflamed, can cause incontinence.

    Prostate

    • Various prostate conditions can lead to incontinence. Some of these include an enlarged prostate, inflammation and prostate cancer.

    Pills

    • Various medications can also lead to incontinence being that they can interfere with proper bladder function. Some examples would be diuretics and sleeping pills.

    Consumption

    • Excessive alcohol consumption can fill your bladder quickly while simultaneously altering your mind, making you not recognize the need to urinate.
