Cure for a Fever Blister

A fever blister is a pain--both literally, in that it hurts, and is also a pain to deal with appearance-wise. There is no way to completely stop fever blister outbreaks, but there are ways to treat the condition and to keep yourself healthier while you are having one.

  1. Cause

    • A fever blister is caused by a virus (herpes simplex type 1, which is different from the virus that causes genital herpes). The virus stays dormant in the face, but occasionally reactivates.

    Outbreak

    • Life events like stress, sunlight exposure, illness or menstruation can cause the herpes simplex type 1 virus to reactivate, causing a fever blister to form.

    Cure

    • Unfortunately, because a fever blister is caused by a virus, there is no cure for the condition. Scientists are working on a vaccine for herpes simplex type 1 virus, but that will only prevent the condition in previously uninfected people, not cure the disease.

    Prevention

    • There are ways to prevent a fever blister outbreak for people who find that blister outbreaks are triggered by sunlight. Sunscreen has been found to help stop fever blister outbreaks.

    Treatment

    • When you have a fever blister, take care of yourself by keeping the area clean and dry and not touching it unnecessarily. Creams and pills can also shorten the period of infection.
