Itching & Skin Irritations During Pregnancy

Skin irritations or itchiness is not uncommon during pregnancy. There are a lot of changes occurring in the body, including hormones. Sometimes, pregnancy can enhance skin conditions a person already has or heighten other sensitivities. Temporary rashes can be common, as well. Try to avoid hot showers/baths, use unscented moisturizers, mild soap and wear cotton clothing. You can also try an oatmeal bath.

  1. Acne

    • Pregnancy can sometimes cause acne, even if you never had problems with it before. The hormonal changes increase production of sebum (oily secretions from sebaceous glands), and too much of it can block pores.

    Stretch Marks

    • Stretch marks (red, brown or white lines) are common along the abdomen, thighs and breasts as the body changes and grows to support the baby.

    Chafing

    • Chafing (red and moist skin) is common around the thighs or breasts as you gain weight throughout the pregnancy.

    Spider Veins

    • Spider veins (clusters of broken blood vessels) can sometimes occur on the cheeks due to increased circulation.

    Linea Nigra

    • Linea Nigra is a dark line that is vertical, usually located near the navel. It appears around the second trimester and is caused by abdominal muscles stretching.
