Cribbage has been a popular game for over 200 years. The history of the game, as well as the cribbage boards that the game is played on, is almost as interesting as the play of the game itself.

    The Game

  1. Cribbage boards are used for a game that is relatively simple; the main goal of cribbage is to get a high score target, that may change depending on the game style. A deck of cards is used along with the board and pegs to round out the game itself.
  2. History

  3. According to The Online Guide to Traditional Games, the game of cribbage was created in England by the seventeenth century by Sir John Suckling. The game continues to be popular to this day all over the world.
  4. The Cribbage Board

  5. Usually made out of wood, the cribbage board has always kept a classic look and feel. The board is nearly a foot long, with a width of around 4 inches. Every board features over 250 holes to play the game.
  6. History of the Board

  7. According to The Online Guide to Traditional Games, the board is incredibly old, as it is derived (or may have been taken from) older boards for games played before the invention of cribbage.
  8. Board Design

  9. The newer designs of cribbage boards feature four rows, each with 120 holes. These boards are generally still made out of wood, but also feature marble and metal, depending on the maker and design.
