    • Bipolar disorder falls under the category of mood disorders; it is characterized by one or more manic and/or depressive episodes, where manic is defined as being excessively excited or agitated, while depressive is a lack of energy.

    Symptoms

    • Symptoms of bipolar disorder include, but are not limited to, suicide attempts, inability to concentrate, excessive goal-directed activity, excessive involvement in risky behavior, substance abuse or dependence, and ADHD.

    • Stress, sleep deprivation, medications, occupational failure and divorce can serve as the building blocks for bipolar disorder.

    • Bipolar disorder occurs equally in men and women; the average age of onset of bipolar disorder is 20 years old.
