About Tinnitus Remedies

Tinnitus, also known as ringing in the ears, is caused by an underlying condition that may be related to either medication or lifestyle. Tinnitus is so common that almost one in five Americans experiences it. Lately, there have been some recent medical and technological developments that can bring relief.

  1. Masking Device

    • A device similar to a hearing aid can be placed in the ear to make a constant white noise that drowns out the ringing sound.

    Medication

    • If other methods of relief don't work, antidepressants can be prescribed to relieve serious tinnitus symptoms.

    Avoiding Triggers

    • Some people have an environmental or emotional trigger that sets off tinnitus. Reducing stress or avoiding the trigger (cigarette smoke, for example) can often relieve or reduce symptoms.

    Avoid Alcohol

    • Alcohol can aggravate tinnitus by increasing the pressure on the inner ear.

    Cure the Underlying Condition

    • Sometimes tinnitus is treated by identifying the underlying cause and curing it.
