Iodine Allergy Symptoms

Although the body does use iodine for the production of hormones, such as thyroxin by the thyroid gland, some people do have iodine allergies. The fact is that most people who are allergic to shellfish or other iodine-rich seafood are more likely to have an iodine allergy.

  1. Thyroid Problems

    • A person with an iodine allergy may also have a thyroid problem, as his body cannot take in the needed iodine to produce the hormones needed. A shortage of this hormone can lead to constipation, weakness, obesity and mental problems.

    Swelling

    • A sure sign of an allergy is swelling of the soft tissues of mouth, lips, tongue and throat. Swelling of the throat can be dangerous since it may obstruct the airway and cause a problem in breathing.

    External Swellling

    • External swelling may not always occur. However, there may be internal swelling and symptoms such as vomiting, wheezing, coughing and diarrhea.

    Eyes and Nose

    • Iodine allergy may also be indicated by typical symptoms of an allergy like red eyes, runny and itchy nose and watery eyes.

    Shock

    • In extreme cases, a person may even go into anaphylactic shock, which is generally characterized by respiratory failure, low blood pressure and even loss of consciousness. In such cases, it's vital to get immediate medical attention.
