Kneading Behavior in Cats

Have you ever seen your cat burrow his head in the couch or covers and start kneading his paws into the soft surface? There is a very good reason why this happens. You may have thought it was pretty weird, but actually it is instinctual. It's nothing to be concerned about.

  1. Identification

    • The kneading behavior in cats is an act where the cat stretches its front paws out and digs his or her paws into a soft surface.

    Significance

    • Kittens knead their paws into their mother's belly to help draw out milk. It is a bonding instinct that starts with the mother.

    Location

    • A cat will commonly knead his paws near his owner or "mother figure."

    Sign of Affection

    • Cats will sometimes go so far as to knead their paws on the skin of humans that they trust. It is a sign of affection.

    Sign of Relaxation

    • Cats usually only knead their paws when they feel completely comfortable and relaxed.
