  1. Fats

    • Diabetics should limit saturated fats to one gram per serving. Total fats should not exceed three grams.

    Carbohydrates

    • Carbohydrates include grains, cereal, pasta, rice, beans and starchy vegetables. Diabetics should eat approximately 150 grams of carbohydrates a day. Carbohydrates should be high in fiber.

    Protein

    • Protein should not exceed six ounces a day and should be lean. Doctors recommend fish and chicken. Limit red meat to three times a week.

    Fruits and Vegetables

    • Diabetics should try to consume three to five servings of fruit and vegetables each day.

    Dairy

    • Dairy should be low fat or non-fat. Diabetics should try to consume at least two servings of dairy a day.
