Pain Relief for Arthritis in Cats

Arthritis is common in older cats and cats that have suffered a severe injury to their limbs when they were younger. Cats do not get as many types of arthritis as dogs or people do, but they do experience the stiffness, pain and swelling. Feline arthritis is complex and generally treated in several ways.

  1. Home Care

    • The Cat Owner's Home Veterinary Handbook recommends that all older cats, particularly those with arthritis, have a warm place indoors to sleep. This keeps the limbs from completely stiffening up as the cat sleeps.

    Diet

    • Being overweight can make arthritis worse in cats. If the cat is overweight, he or she needs to go on a low-fat diet.

    Medications

    • These include short-acting drugs such as Adequan injections, amantadine and (rarely) Tramadol. Long-term medications are nutriticeuticals such as glucosamine and chondroitin.

    Alternative Therapies

    • Wendy C. Brooks, DVM wrote that gentle massage on the arthritic limb can help ease arthritis pain in cats. Making sure the cat has some exercise every day can help keep the joints limber.

    Warning

    • Never use human arthritis medications or over the counter painkillers for cats. They are far too strong for cats and will get them very sick.
